What is Stool Routine And Microscopic Examination ?

A stool test checks for bacteria, parasites, and viruses in your poop sample that can cause illness. A stool test can also be used to look out for signs of blood in your stool sample. The test can be a routine examination, and it can also be used to screen for gastrointestinal infections and colon cancer. The test assesses ten parameters, such as the colour, consistency, and the presence of mucus, blood, parasites, cysts, pus, and RBC in the stool sample provided by you.

A doctor may recommend a stool test if you are experiencing symptoms like:

  • Blood in your stool.
  • Mucus in your stool.
  • Diarrhea continued for more than three days.
  • Stomach pain or cramping.
  • Nausea that lasts days.

If your body is showing any of these signs, don’t wait for long, book your stool test or stool routine and microscopic examination now with Healthians, from the comfort of your home. Stool tests at Healthians cost just ₹120.

Types of stool Tests

Normally there are three types of stool tests. However, your doctor will suggest any of these stool tests based on your symptoms:

  • Fecal occult blood test (FOBT): The aim of this test is to detect blood in your stool. A positive result signals bleeding inside the digestive tract.
  • FIT-DNA test: Apart from detecting tiny amounts of blood in your stool, this test also checks for altered DNA that could indicate precancerous or cancerous conditions.
  • Infection Detection Test: The purpose of this test is to look for germs in your stool by either growing them, looking for them under the microscope, or looking for germ DNA.

What does a stool test help diagnose?

A single stool test can reveal several different gastrointestinal conditions, including:

  • Anal fissures
  • Anemia
  • Colitis
  • Colon polyps
  • Colorectal (colon) cancer.
  • Diverticulosis
  • Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Infections (bacterial, viral, or parasitic).
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Steatorrhea
  • Stomach ulcers

Why Take a Stool Test?

The test may be prescribed in the following instances:

  • If you have symptoms of gastrointestinal illness such as gas, bloating, abdominal pain or cramping, constipation, diarrhoea, changes in bowel habits, blood or mucus in the stool.
  • If you are above the age of 45, you are at high risk of developing bowel cancer.
  • If you’re diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
  • To screen for colorectal cancer.
  • If you have a medical or family history of colorectal cancer or colorectal polyps.
  • To check if you have poor absorption of food
  • To detect any infection that might be the cause behind diarrhoea and blood in stool.

Stool Test Preparation

Follow these tips before and when you are collecting your stool sample:

  • It is recommended to eat a clean diet at least for 48 hours before the test.
  • Avoid red meat, as it can affect the sample assessment.
  • Avoid eating fruits and veggies that contain reddish-brown coloured proteins. For example, tomatoes, red bell peppers, and beetroot
  • Avoid taking a diet rich in iron.
  • Avoid supplements, especially vitamin C supplements.
  • Do not take any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin. It’s best to let your doctor know about the medicines you’re taking.

How to Collect a Stool Sample?

  • You will be provided with a container in which you have to provide your stool sample.
  • Urinate before, do not urinate when you are collecting stool samples. Ensure the urine doesn’t mix with the stool sample, as it can affect the test results.
  • Do not give contaminated samples, i.e., samples picked from the toilet.
  • You may need some things that can be placed in the toilet to catch the stool. A piece of plastic wrap or any clean container that can be placed between the toilet seat and bowl can work. In case the stool is loose or liquid, avoid using plastic wrap.
  • Ensure the stool doesn’t touch the sides of the toilet bowl.
  • Use a plastic tray to place the stool sample into the container.
  • Dispose of any remaining stool sample carefully in the toilet.
  • Ensure you wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap and running water after the procedure.
